Finding Your Mission: The Importance of Running Your Mouth About Your Book.

Too many writers write and think alone, springing their new work on unsuspecting others without taking advantage of the built-in focus groups we call friends and lovers. Sure, mommy loves anything you write and hubby will say yes if it means a good meal, so maybe the opinions of people you know may be suspect. But there’s more to be had from discussing your work than just a series of rubber stamps. Bounce it off people to see if it tracks. Talk to experienced writers to discuss devices. Find a mentor or writing coach who will hold you to an agreed-upon standard of literacy and clarity.

If books are a reflection–albeit skewed at times–of real life, then it is essential to plumb the environment from which the book will spring and to which you hope it will return, the environment of humanity. Don’t trust just one person’s opinion, but have the confidence to solicit suggestions and feedback, then the wisdom to choose what works for you and work book.
